The A.R.T. & Justice initiative is an innovative project that seeks to address health and justice inequalities experienced by incarcerated individuals, particularly those from marginalized communities. The project provides art and writing supplies, Indigenous medicines, teachings, and support to prisoners as a form of therapy to support their mental health and well-being.

The initiative is guided by the Community Advisory Network (CAN) and community partners, who help identify and prioritize the health, well-being, and dignity of all individuals and communities impacted by the criminal justice system (CJS). The project team, led by Helen Brown and Amanda Slaunwhite, comprises individuals from different departments, institutions, and social backgrounds, working together to promote inclusive, participatory, and meaningful engagement with individuals impacted by the CJS.

Through their research, the A.R.T. & Justice project has identified three interconnected themes: determinants of health and justice, incarceration, and (re)integration. These themes impact individuals with CJS experience across generations. By utilizing decolonizing, culturally safe, and strengths-based approaches, the project team aims to create a transformative impact on society.

The A.R.T. & Justice project is an important step towards transforming the criminal justice system and addressing health and justice inequities experienced by underserved populations. Join the project in promoting inclusive, participatory, and meaningful engagement with individuals impacted by the CJS.
